Innerspring mattress

As the name already indicates innerspring mattresses consist of springs which are placed next to each other and can be produced in different spiral shapes. The more springs the denser they are in the mattress, the more comfortable is their elasticity and the better they can adapt to body shapes. Individually packed springs (for example at pocket spring core mattresses) provide a good selective pressure in contrast to normally connected springs which sink more extensively. For the right choice it is essential to consider the body weight (Taschenfederkernmatratzen).

For people who easily sweat innerspring mattresses are the ideal solution since they almost do not absorb any moisture (Federkernmatratzen). However, they cannot be rolled or bent which makes their use on an adjustable slatted frame senseless and they should be transported in a large vehicle as well (Lattenrost). The durability of innerspring mattresses mainly depends on quality. It can be prolonged by using mattress coatings and covers. At the latest when you can feel the individual springs through the mattress or they even create visible bumps on the surface the time has come for a new mattress (Matratzenauflagen).

Latex mattresses

The pleasantly hard latex mattresses have been available for more than 80 years. In the beginning they were produced 100% from natural latex which became brittle after a relatively short time. By using synthetic latex the durability of these mattresses was remarkably increased. Through the vulcanization process different pollutants can occur depending on the composition, therefore it is necessary to pay attention to particular test marks. The slightly unpleasant smell of new latex mattresses vanishes after a few days (Latexmatratzen).

The advantages of latex mattresses lay in their high selective elasticity. They do only sink in where they are stressed at the moment. Especially good for side –sleepers is the fact that shoulders and hips can sink in deeper and therefore the spine is kept in an orthopedically healthy position. As soon as you turn to the stomach or the back the latex mattress immediately returns to its original shape and thus perfectly supports the body in every position.

Foam mattresses

Foam mattresses or cold foam mattresses are the most common used mattresses next to innerspring mattresses in our sleeping rooms (Schaumstoffmatratzen, Kaltschaummatratzen). The highly-elastic material is much lighter than latex mattresses. Depending on body weight the thickness and density of the mattress has to be taken into consideration in order to support the body well. Too soft or hard foam mattresses soon become uncomfortable.

In cold foam mattresses cavities are worked in so that differently soft zones are created. Very common are 3 or 5 zone mattresses which sink in less on less stressed parts such as on the head or the legs but provide a higher elasticity in the area of the shoulders or the pelvis. Precondition for this, however, is always the correct division according to your body size. Not everybody perceives these mattresses being really more comfortable.

Foam mattresses are very tough. They can be rolled or bent and are therefore the best variety for adjustable slatted frames. However, they can also absorb a lot of moisture, which is why they should be coated by a removable cover that can be washed from time to time.
